Consumer Protection

Nathan van der Raaij
Head of Consumer Protection

Over the past 50 years, the European Union has introduced a robust set of policies and regulations to safeguard the rights of European consumers and communities from unlawful actions or omissions. For example, the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive provides enhanced protection to vulnerable consumers, such as children, the elderly, and those with physical or mental disabilities. Another recent example is the Representative Actions Directive, which allows consumers to defend their collective interests through actions led by representative organisations.

These rights can be upheld by collective groups of individuals, consumer rights bodies and of course governmental regulatory organisations.  Our lawyers have considerable expertise in assisting with consumer protection issues, not least of all because the Dutch procedural and legal environment lends itself to collective redress.
